Meet My little cheap dictaphone

The rendezvous is taken for Friday at 17:15, Café in dance deserted by the audience and takes the air of calm before the storm. See the bare room is both impressive and moving. Located near the bar three members My Little Cheap Dictaphone who made the trip (only the drummer missing) initiate an acoustic session immortalized by colleagues Site flippant. In just two titles, the group exude a palpable excitement, and as possessed an impressive commitment. A few minutes later, we find Redboy (vocals and guitar), almost swimming, accompanied by bassist Xavier settled at a table. The time for us a few questions ... How

started the My Little Cheap Dictaphone?

Redboy (vocals, guitar) : At first it was a solo project. I started as a low-fi songwriter, I wanted to do everything myself. I recorded alone in my room on a voice recorder, that's how the project was born. I made an album, but then I started another group, Hollywood Porn Stars. The second album from My Little Cheap Dictaphone "Small Town Boys" was made between two albums Hollywood Porn Stars. For this third album we really wanted to heal and to do things thoroughly. We really took our time. It finally took us three years.

Listening to the disc I was immediately struck by the magnitude of sound, the care given to the production, rich arrangements ...

Redboy: At first we wanted to work on some securities with a music arranger of film to give a cinematic side. The exchange went well with the arranger, and eventually he arranged the entire album with orchestral instruments. For this album we a pianist who joined us in the group (Louis) and we wanted out of the usual guitars / bass / drums rock and expand, expand the range.

Which filmmakers do you want to work?

Redboy : A film by Jim Jarmusch. Neil Young did the music of "Dead Man". David Lynch would be too great. We could really let go. But "The Tragic Tale of a Genius" is somewhere in the soundtrack to an imaginary film.

There is a jazz tone a bit surprising on some tracks of the disc ("Slow Me Down," "The tragic tale of a genius "), One side with a little honky-tonk piano highlighted. It is a direct contribution of Louis?

Redboy: Yes he really has a blues and jazz background. We wanted to get out of the usual indie rock and dare piano. We had no fence, we wanted to try a maximum of things and not make an album repetitive. Each took his share of personality in the songs.

How did you come in contact with the guests on the disc (Jonathan Donahue, Ralph Mulder, Pall Jenkins)?

Xavier (bass) : In the case of Jonathan Donahue a mutual friend introduced us. He sent an email with the song and he told us directly. Ralph Mulder, Redboy had already met at concerts. And the album was recorded in a studio where he had worked.

Redboy: Pall Jenkins And, it's been ten years since the cross at concerts too.

Xavier We needed different voices in relation to the concept of the album. Redboy plays the main character who is facing inner demons, his conscience. Redboy could not interpret these voices, representing a split personality. Was really perfect list of speakers that we wanted and everyone said yes directly. All is super well.

Who is the Genius of the title? Brian Wilson?

Redboy: ago Brian Wilson among others. It's a mixture. I read a lot of biographies of musicians. I noticed a lot of similarities in the history of their respective lives. The fact that they are still somewhat apart from childhood, they have cracks then they exploit. These artists spoke to me and I wanted to talk. I felt pretty close too. I needed find myself able to write and embody the character.

And you think the cracks are needed to make music or just create it?

Redboy: Not especially. There are people who are very good in their shoes and doing songs too. Everything depends on the music you want to do. Our music is all on edge, melancholy and based on emotions. I think it's good enough to talk about personal things that sustain people. Rather than telling trivialities or standard love songs. It really tries to pass the chills.

Project Art seems quite broad and goes beyond music and album. Is what you could talk about the collaborations that have been introduced to the show?

Redboy: From the beginning we wanted to do more than just an album and more than just a concert. It was surrounded by people to help us tell the story through the sets and projections. We worked with Double Duchess, a couple of Brussels who makes videos and short films. Fairly quickly we began to work in parallel on everything. The music on one side and I'm going hide away in Norway to write texts. And during this time working with Double Duchess continued. We thought that the videos is really the place to delve into history. There are thirteen short videos that are projected on a backdrop during the show. The decor simulates an American city of the 50s, a New York film noir with windows glow on which are projected images.

Is there a dvd of the show would would be expected to capture the whole?

Redboy: Not yet. For the moment we are working on small catchments in the coming months. But a real DVD from a to z this is not yet scheduled.

you enjoy it?

Xavier Yeah, why not ...

Redboy: I think it would be the logical culmination enough to finish the tour. We will see later ...

The cover is classy ...

Redboy: Same , we worked with a designer whose work we loved. He was asked to draw inspiration from the 50s and posters of black films. He was shown the videos, he did listen to the songs. Her world was also consistent with ours. We also put our button. As with everything, we always try to give our leg and it is comprehensive and coherent. We worked with a photographer also photos of the album. He drew pictures of filming of Hitchcock's films. This is a brand, we try to treat each step.

Where does the name of the group?

Redboy: When I started the solo project, as soon as I had ideas, I recorded on my little cheap dictaphone. I went out the demos on cassette at the time. I sent one over which he was marked: Recorded on my little cheap dictaphone. It remained as the group name.

Redboy, in Hollywood Porn Stars you doing guitar and vocals, is that the transition was difficult to become a singer / frontman?

Redboy: No, I was doing before Hollywood MLCD. Hollywood was a recreation, a delirium of a group do very rock where we went out the guitars. I found myself on the front of the stage for what I missed it also redo my own songs. Do something more intimate with more emotions.

During the acoustic session was felt at a time given a physical strong group, you were like in a trance ...

Redboy: Concerts is a pretty intense experience. We try to go into a trance.

Xavier Make live concert.

Redboy: If you leave the concert without having really wet the shirt ... It's really important for us to live the thing thoroughly.

It's exhausting, right?

Redboy: Yes, but that's what's good ...

Xavier: It why we do ...
